Borrel reminded Zelensky that the European Union is not an ATM
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrel spoke about the results of his visit to Ukraine. The statement of the politician is published on the official website of the European Union. As I told the president (Vladimir Zelensky news agency), the European Union is not a charity organization or an ATM: the best way for us to support Ukraine is to help reform the country, Borrel said. He noted that Ukraine remains one of the priority countries for the EU. It will continue to be supported, but the amount of support is associated with strengthening the fight against Ukrainian corruption. Borrel added that the pace of reforms in Ukraine has slowed down. This process was influenced by the resignation of the reformer government in March 2020. At the same time, President Zelensky continues to be a source of hope: citizens still expect him to reform and the promised changes for which he was elected, the diplomat emphasized. According to the news agency, earlier the Ukrainian economist Sergey Fursa interpreted Borrel's words as a call to the Ukrainian authorities to behave decently.
